Introduction
Don’t know where to spend your winter holiday? In the Czech mountains, of course! Although the mountains of Bohemia and Moravia are not as high as the Alps or as Slovakia's High Tatras, they still offer many excellent resorts, many of them an easy drive from Prague. Instead of gaudy modern resorts, you wil find plenty of charming villages and towns. Many resorts have the added benefit of sitting atop the country's numerous hot springs, so it's not unusual to relax in a thermal bath after a hard day on the slopes.

The nearest mountains to Prague are just an hour and a half from town. The most famous resorts are found in the Krokonoše Mountains (Giant Mountains).
Many resorts offer prices that are more affordable than those found in Alpine resorts. Many instructors speak English, so you can also take lessons or sign up your kids to learn how to ski. If you're into freestyle, mini-skis or snowboarding, you'll be glad to know that many resorts have areas especially reserved for these (and many other) activities. The Czech Republic is also a paradise for cross-country skiing, children and for nature lovers of all stripes.
So all you have to do is wait for the snow (and, with the advent of snow-making equipment, even that isn't an issue anymore), and come December you can hit the slopes.
Happy skiing!
