Moravský Krumlov

Located 27 kilometers southwest of Brno and 216 kilometres from Prague, Moravský Krumlov is best known as the site where one can admire Alfons Mucha's enormous series of paintings, the Slav Epic.

Mucha's famous Slav Epic can be seen at Moravský Krumlov Castle (open April to October, Tuesday-Sunday 9 am to noon and 1 to 4 pm).

The story of the Slav Epic is as interesting as the paintings themselves. Mucha spent 18 years completing the twenty works of art now known as the Slav Epic, which tells the legend and history of the Slavic people.

In 1910, the world famous artist donated this unique series of paintings to his country; the idea was that they would be displayed in Prague, but no suitable place has ever been found.

The Slav Epic starts with a painting about the origin of the Slavid people and concludes with a celebration of freedom for the Slavic nations who gained independence in 1918.

Mucha studied his country’s annals covering the period of the work and used important historical persons in his works to reflect Czech and Slavic history. Each painting is a manifestation of history.
