Bohemian Switzerland National Park

The park is located near the German border, 110 kilometres from Prague. This protected wilderness area is a veritable paradise for hikers, cyclists, mountaineers and families... unless you are a hardcore urbanite who loves concrete and traffic, everybody loves this region!

Bohemian Switzerland may not have mountains to rival the Alpine peaks of its namesake, but it has some of the most breathtaking scenery found anywhere in the country - the region's amazing sandstone formations are truly worth seeing, and exquisite vistas reward your hike to the top.

Located near the border town of Hřensko, the sandstone arch of Pravčická brana (Pravčice Gate) is an extraordinary natural monument. At 21 meters high and 25 meters long, it is the highest natural rock gate in Europe. The gate is definitely worth a hike, but if you don't like adventure, you will find a car park and road nearby.

The short walk is about four kilometres through the woods and rocks to arrive at the arch. This family-friendly hike is rewarded by amazing views and the nearby Falcon's Nest mountain chateau offers snacks and refreshments, plus a museum of the national park. An entry fee is charged to the park, but the price is low.

Another destination is Edmundova soutěska (Edmund's gorge), which can be reached by a flat two-kilometer trail starting in Hřensko. Soon, the gorge becomes so narrow that the cliffs fall straight into the water, and the "trail" continues by boat. The boatsman takes you to Divoka souteska (Wild Gorge), which despite its name is a quiet canyon. The tour takes 20 minutes. After another two kilometres by foot, another boat brings you to Ticha souteska (Silent Gorge), which is twice as large as the previous one. At the end, there is a waterfall.

Also worth visiting is the imposing Panská skála cliff, an amazing basalt formation which looks like organ pipes. The cliff is located 30km east of Děčín, near Kamenický Šenov
