These mountains located on the border between the Czech Republic and Poland were part of the so-called Sudetenland, which before the Second World War was inhabited mainly by Germans. The range's highest peak is Velká Deštná (1115 m). Romantic and wooded, the Eagle Mountains and Kralický Sněžník range are popular hiking destinations, far from the concrete and stress of large cities.

The region's main cities are Nové Město nad Metuji and the winter resort of Olešnice. The Kralický Sněžník range are the third-highest mountains in the Czech Republic, after the Krkonoše (Giant Mountains) and Hrubý Jeseník. 

The mountains' name refers to the fact that they are covered in snow for an average of eight months of the year. They are also the where the Morava River originates. 

The nature preserve in the Eagle Mountains is home to three hiking trails. The first is circles around Deštná, it is circular and is approximately 15 kilometers lon. The second trail (17 kilometers) follows the mountains' ridgeline, and the third (13 km) starts near Bartošovice, goes to Zemská brána and finishes near the town of Klášterec and Orlicí

For downhill skiing, the best-known locations are Deštné and Říčky. Cross-country skiers can choose from 90 kilometers of maintained trails.
