General information

Prague (photo: Czechtourism)

Area: 78864 square kilometres

Capital: Prague (1,180,000 inhabitants)

Population: 10,246,000 Inhabitants. Czech (81%), Moravian (13%), Slovak (3%), others (3%)

The number of inhabitants of the Czech Republic has been declining steadily for more than ten years. The population dropped by nearly 100,000 inhabitants between 1990 and 2000. While this may seems small, it is worrying insofar as it is representative of a long-term demographic trend.

Main cities: Brno (400,000 inhabitants), Ostrava (342,000 inhabitants), Plzen (179,000 inhabitants).
