A musical New Year's Eve
December 26, 2010 - Celebrate New Year's Eve with live music! The Prague scene offers several concerts to choose from, something for every taste.
A traditional New Year's Eve concert is the performance by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, held at 4,30pm in the Rudolfinum's Dvořák Hall: the orchestra will be playing a program entitled "European Dances," featuring Smetana, Dvořák, Sibelius, Brahms, Martinů, Shostakovich, and Strauss.
On New Year's Day, January 1, 2011, the Prague Symphony Orchestra will perform in the georgeous Art Nouveau Municipal House. On the programme (starting time: 7:30pm): Dvořák, Bernstein, Gerschwin, and Copland, among others.
Or do you prefer the blues? Come on down to Blues Sklep for a concert by the Kingsize Boogiemen. Or check out U malého Glena and Stan the Man Blues Band. Important: make sure to reserve your seats ahead of time!
Does your taste swing to jazz? Jazz Dock, one of Prague's best jazz clubs, has prepared a complete evening for you right on the Vltava embankment. Another venue worth checking out: Metropolitan Jazz Club.
Prague's alternative clubs are also ringing in the New Year: Palác Akropolis will host the Prague-based ska band Fast Food Orchestra and several party DJs, and the Vagon will be filled with pure classic rock: a cover band playing the Beatles, Queen, AC/DC and Deep Purple. For DJ dance music, check out Lucerna, Futurum or Lávka.
Another suggestion: some of the smaller Prague churches are always offering classical music concerts - what better time to enjoy the unique atmosphere of these grand old buildings than on the last day of the year?
