Attend a Christmas concert, attend a Christmas market or tour a brewery near Prague
December 6, 2011 - Enjoy the Christmas season but escape the hustle and bustle of Old Town in the small village of Únětice, literally a stone's throw from Prague's city limits. On Dec. 10, there will be two performances of Jan Jakub Ryba's Czech Christmas Mass, and on Dec. 17 and 18 the local brewery will be holding a Christmas market.
Jan Jakub Ryba's Christmas Mass, composed in the late 18th and early 19th century, is one of the greatest Czech Christmas traditions (ironically, considering that most Czechs are not particularly religious) and an inseparable part of Czech Christmas. Also known as "Hej mistře," (after one of the songs), it is performed at churches and other locations througout the Czech Republic.
Of course, you can see the performance in Prague, but for something a little different, why not check out the amateur performance in the village of Únětice, located just a few kilometers from Prague (take bus 355 from Dejvická to the final stop). There will be two performance on Saturday, December 10: at 4:45pm and at 7:15pm. Admission is CZK 110 CZK (free for children). Each year, the role of Jesus, Mary and Joseph is played by a newborn baby from the village and its parents. The shows usually sell out. We recommend picking up tickets several days in advance at town hall (Obecni urad, across from the "Obecni urad" bus stop.
Also in town, you will find newly opened brewery, which has come up with a special dark Christmas lager. The brewery offers tours, and on December 17 and 18 will host a Christmas market where you will find ceramics, Christmas decorations, textiles and more. Children receive a free gift, and food and refreshments will be available. And if you're in a competitive, the brewery also features a unique indoor petanque court.
