Delve into Czech history at Prague Castle

October 2008 - In many ways, Prague Castle is the spiritual, political and cultural heart of the Czech nation. Seat of kings and emperors, burial site of many historical leaders. No wonder, then, that its many galleries feature exhibits where you can learn even more about the history of the country.

You've seen St. Vitus Cathedral, the Spanish Hall, the Royal Gardens, the Ball Game Hall and Golden Lane. If you still have energy, Prague Castle also offers several galleries and exhibition spaces. Currently, two of these spaces feature exhibits at which you can explore the history of the Czech Republic in even more detail.

The Theresian Wing of the Old Royal Palace is now hosting The Czechoslovak Legions in Russia, 1914-1920. This exhibit tells the tale of the Czech and Slovak soldiers who joined the foreign legions during World War I in order to fight against Austria-Hungary and for independence. In Russia, many of these soldiers later found themselves fighting against the Russian Revolution, and thus did not return home until several years after the Great War had ended.

Meanwhile, at the Imperial Stables is 28 October at Prague Castle. Changes in Czechoslovak Statehood, 1918 - 1948, a look at the changing concept of Czechoslovakia and in particular independence day, 28 October. From the very beginning, there were different attempts at defining this national holiday, with its meaning and significance being particularly contested under German occupation (1939-1945) and during the communist era.
