The Rolling Stones, a Hungarian countess and a key battle from World War Two are just a few examples of what can be seen this week (in English or with English subtitles). Rolling Stones: Shine a Light, Martin Scorsese's rock documentary, was filmed at two Stones concerts at New York's Beacon Theatre in 2006. Opening acts were Christina Aguilera, Jack White and Buddy Guy. (13 Oct, 14 Oct and 20 Oct at 8.30pm, 15 Oct. at 6pm).

The new Czech film Tobruk (16 Oct. at 8.30pm, 17 Oct. at 6pm, 18 Oct. at 3.30 and 8.30pm) follows the events of the autumn of 1941, when Czechoslovak troops fighting with the Allies participated in the battle for the strategic Libyan port city of Tobruk. The film follows the story of young idealistic Czech soldier, whose naivite is confronted with the harsh conditions of desert fighting.

And from an entirely different chapter of history comes famed Slovak director Juraj Jakubisko's Bathory (16 Oct at 6pm, 17 Oct at 8.30pm, 18 Oct. at 6pm, 19 Oct. at 3.30pm), about the infamous Hungarian Countess Elizabeth Bathory - known as the "Blood Countess" for allegedly having killed hundreds of young girls and women and supposedly bathing in their blood. (She actually was convicted of 80 murders, but historians disagree as to how true the charges are.) Jakubisko takes a more revisionist approach, seeing the accusations as attempts by her enemies to get rid of her. In any case, he has made an epic historical film about a time and place little known to the English-speaking world.
