Film festivals descend on Prague

February 23, 2010 - In March, Prague will be literally drowning in a flood of celluloid. Two local festivals invite films and audiences from around the world to share the magic and power of film.

First, from March 10 to 18, the One World film festival presents a full week of movies devoted to human rights. The movies range from short documentaries to full-length feature films, and cover topics such as violence against women, Afghanistan, Myanmar, homelessness and poverty, and the recent “green” protests in Iran.

True to its mission to spread important messages and ideas, One World will be shown not only in Prague, but in more than a dozen cities throughout the Czech Republic. Thanks to Czech Television, several films can be watched online, and festival-goers will choose three films that will be provided free for rental to anyone who asks, meaning you can show them at your local club, school, or wherever.

For more information and a program, visit Oneworld.cz.

At the end of March, Prague’s largest film festival, Febiofest, returns for its 17th year. Featuring hundreds of films from around the world, Febiofest is a film-lover’s delight.

This year’s special guests include Fanny Ardant (8 Women) and German actor Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire, The Downfall).

As always, Febiofest’s music program offers something for everyone: ska, punk, Brazialian, African, drum ‘n’ bass, reggae, folk and more.

After taking Prague by storm, a smaller version of Febiofest moves on to Brno, Olomouc, Ostrava, Pardubice, Liberec, and Hradec Králové.

The full festival program will be published by March 10.
