Footballer Koller to play for Cannes
January 6, 2010 - Two-meter tall giant Jan Koller, one of the best Czech footballers and all-time leading goal scorer for the Czech national team, has transferred to French third-division team AS Cannes.
Koller has played 94 matches with the Czech national team, scoring a total of 56 goals. His career has been one marked by several trades. At two meters, Sparta Praha found him clumsy and saw little promise in him, so they sold him to Belgium’s Lokeren, where he rose to prominence and transferred to Anderlecht.
His first match with the Czech national team was against the Belgians, where he immediately scored a goal. He later had the best years of his career in Dortmund, Germany, where he and “football’s Mozart” Tomáš Rosický combined to form a duo feared by the defenses of Europe’s best teams. Rosický later transferred to Arsenal London and Koller to AS Monaco. His last successful engagement was in Samara, Russia.
Koller chose to conclude his career with AS Cannes partially because his Czech wife and two daughters have been living in the south of France since his time in Monaco, and they like it there.
Koller will turn 37 in March, but he will clearly be a great benefit to Cannes. He is an excellent player and, despite his two meters, he has an excellent technique and leg strength. If he spreads out his hands in the penalty zone, it is nearly impossible to defend against him.
Koller had also received offers from several German clubs with significantly better pay. But in his own words, his main goal is to have fun while playing and the beautiful town of Cannes with its third-division team are the perfect solution.
