Goran Bregović achieved international fame thanks to his music in the films of Emir Kusturica - Time of the Gypsies, Arizona Dream, Underground - and has toured extensively with his band. His opera is a Carmen with a K and a Balkan accent. It had its premiere in Italy in 2004, and has since been performed over one hundred times. Written, composed and directed by Goran Bregovic (with only a few quotes from Bizet's "Carmen"), this gypsy opera is performed by the musicians of his Wedding and Funeral Band.
