Khamoro World Roma Festival

May 25, 2010 - The 12 annual Khamoro festival celebrates gypsy culture.


Khamoro means "sun" and the festival is usually held during the last week in May (this year, May 23 to 29). The festival features traditional gypsy music and modern gypsy jazz, as well as a dance workshop with the Frencyh group Romano Atmo (May 28 and 30), an exhibit on the Roma genocide during World War II (at the Slovak Institute until June 16) and a seminar on Romani identity (May 28 and 29).

Concerts this week:

  • May 25 at 9pm: Gispy Strings (Germany) at Club Reduta (jazz)
  • May 26 at 8pm: Tchavolo Schmitt (France) and the Gipsy String Trio (Netherlands) at Lucerna Music bar
  • May 27 at noon: procession by Romani groups through central Prague (from Wenceslaus Square to Old Town Square)
  • May 27 at 7pm: Concert by traditional musicians at the Roxy
  • May 28 at 7pm: Concert by traditional musicians at the Roxy
  • May 29 at 8pm: Closing concert at the Congress Center: Black Panthers (Serbia), Mahala Rai Banda (Romania), Šukar (Slovenia), Orkestar Braka Kadrievi (Macedonia), Romano Atmo (France/Ukraine), Romano Stilo (Slovakia), Surmajovci (Czech Republic)
