May Day is for lovers

April 2009 - May 1 may long have been the official "workers' holiday", filled with speeches, parades and schoolchildren waving red flags, but not only...

This day is also the traditional day of lovers, thanks to the popularity of Máj, Karel Hynek Mácha's legendary poem about ill-fated lovers. On this day Praguers flock to Petřín hill to lay flowers at the foot of the poet's statue, and to lie and frolic under the blossoming cherry trees.

It is a truly festive and romantic atmosphere. Near the foot of the hill, poets traditionally gather for public readings, young people lounge about on the green grass, and people of all ages wander the pathways up the hill, enjoying what often is the first warm day of the year.

And if the grass is rustling under the pink blossoming trees, then you know that love is in the air.
