The Museum of Communism recreates the reality of life under totalitarian rule in Czechoslovakia from the 1948 Communist takeover to the regime's collapse in 1989 through a variety of objects and documents from the period. The museum presents these exhibits under the title: “Communism: The Dream, the Reality and the Nightmare”.
Visitors can learn about the origins and main actors of communism in Czechoslovakia and the world. First, the museum presents communist ideals, before taking us through history: a reconstruction of a classroom, agricultural work, empty stores.
Another exhibit shows the vision of communism through the eyes of artists of the time. The nightmare of communism is presented through an interrogation room. Documentary films show the events of the time, including the Prague Spring and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
In short: This museum abounds in information which will be interesting in particular for younger generations who do not remember the time or did not experience it. History is brought to life by statues, books, clothing. All reconstructions include commentary for a better understanding of life under the Communist regime. Moreover all documents are translated into several languages, and the films are presented in Czech with English subtitles. These in particular show scenes about communist repression that we often do not have the occasion to see.
Fans of dark humour should make sure to have a look at the humorous reworkings of propaganda posters.
