National Theatre Advent Concert

December 2009 -Once again the National Theatre has prepared a delightful series of special concerts taking place on all four Advent Sundays. Just to put the icing on the cake, the Christmas tree will be lit with all due ceremony this Sunday on the piazza in front of the National Theatre.

As in previous years, the highly popular Advent concerts will be a wonderful addition to the repertoire of the Opera stage of the National Theatre. As well as the Czech Christmas Mass by Jan Jakub Ryba, visitors will be able to enjoy time-honoured compositions by such immortals as the Baroque masters Johann Sebastian Bach and Acangelo Corelli. They will be interpreted by gifted soloists and the orchestra Collegium 1704, which has been enjoying increasing popularity in their chosen field of interpreting Baroque and Classicist music as could be seen in their highly successful production of Händel’s opera Rinaldo that was staged in the Estates Theatre.

The first in the series of concerts will take place this Sunday; the remaining ones will be staged on the following Sundays – 6th, 13th and 20th December. All of them start at 2 p.m.

Among the talented performers will appear: Stanislava Mihalcová, Markéta Cukrová, Jaroslav Březina, Tomáš Král, Jaromír Nosek, the Prague Philharmonic Children's Choir and the above mentioned Orchestra Collegium 1704.

It has become tradition that the Christmas fair is launched on the first Advent Sunday in front of the National Theatre. The event will kick off at noon, and the festive ambience of the traditional Christmas fair will be enhanced by craftsmen demonstrating folk craft and various Christmas customs that include plenty of hot drinks and refreshments that are on offer to warm visitors up.

The main part of the festive afternoon will start on the piazza of the National Theatre at 3.30 p.m. and will culminate in the ceremonial lighting of the tree.  The programme will feature the Children's Opera Prague, Theatre Mimotaurus, Folk Ensemble Čtyřlístek, Club of Trumpet Players ČMMJ and others.

All Praguers are invited not only to shop for Christmas presents, but also to compete for tickets for a performance of the National Theatre and the National Theatre Christmas Season Ticket.
