October 4, 2010 - On Octover 9, The medieval Astronomical Clock on Prague's Old Town Square - one of the city's best known attractions - celebrates its 600th anniversary.

Mapping the Old Post Office in Prague's South City

In honor of this important date, a video mapping projection will be presented directly on the south wall of Old Town Hall, where the clock is situated.

The projection introduces visitors to important chapters in the clock's history.

The computer animation presents the construction of the clock, from blueprints to the stonework by Petr Parléř and the calendar face by Josef Mánes.

Thanks to the display, visitors to Old Town Square can see into the insides of the clockwork itself. The projection also recalls dramatic events such as the Hussite Wars, the execution of Prague noblemen, and the clock's damage during the liberation of Prague in 1945.

The ten-minute projections will take place on Saturday, October 9 from 7.30 to 10pm - beginning every full and half hour immediately following the March of the Apostles.

Video mapping - i.e the projection of images directly onto a building - is a technique that has been ganining in popularity around the world, including the Czech Republic.

First, the building is scanned by lasers so that the animation can be designed to fit the exact outline of the strucutre. The result each time is an entirely unique audio-visual work.

Czech audiovisual artists see the mapping of the Prague Astronomical Clock as a truly prestigious opportunity. The program will feature technical, artistic, and historical information on the clock - as well as the many legends in which the clock is shrouded.

The visuals will be accompanied by music, but without any narration or dialogue, meaning that the projections will be comprehensible by all, regardless of language.
