The Czech mountains - the best ski resorts

December 11, 2010 - Welcome to our mini-guide to Czech skiing opportunities. Whether downhill or cross-country, alone or with the family, skiers or snowboarders - the Czech has something for everyone.

The Czech Republic is bordered by mountains on almost all sides - the ideal place for nature lovers and (of course) skiers. More than 200 ski resorts offer downhill skiing and snowboard slopes. Test your skills on at least 450 kilometers of ski slopes.

The country's ski resorts continue to modernise their infrastructure. This year, in preparation for the ski season, the local ski industry invested more than 1.5 billion Czech crowns (60 million Euro) into improvements. Twenty-five Czech ski resorts have received four or five stars from the association of chairlift operators.

The Czech Republic's largest ski resort is in Špindlerův Mlýn, located in the Giant Moutains (known in Czech as the Krkonoše), the country's tallest mountains, located about two hours by car from Prague. At Špindlerův Mlýn, you will find five ski lifts and 11 chair lifts; at nearby Horní Mísečky there are 25 kilometers of ski runs, 95% of which are equipped for artificial snow, if necessary.

Our personal favorite: Rokytnice nad Jizerou, also in the Giant Mountains.

There's also plenty of new things this year, including three new ski resorts. Kouty nad Desnou in the Jesenik mountains is 25 hectares large, making it the largest ski resort in Moravia. One six-person ski lift and two modern chairlifts will take you to the sommit. Also new is Červená Voda in the Eagle Mountains (Orlické hory), which offers - among other things - a two-kilometer downhill run.

Sněžník Dolní Morava has been renovated to the tune of several million crowns and now offers four-person ski lifts that have significantly reduced time spent waiting in line. Also, one more ski run has been added, and all downhill runs have seen safety improvements.

Most Czech ski resprts publish their latest news and information at www.holidayinfo.cz, where you can find out how many ski runs are open, weather conditions, contact information for the ski rescue service, and other useful information.
