The first Czech pirate radio celebrates 19 years of legality

February 17, 2010 - Pixies, Nirvana, New Order, Radiohead, Pale Saints? What music were you listening to in 1992? Or 1999? Rádio 1 is celebrating 19 years of its existence with current and former deejays each day playing music only from one specific year. On Wednesday, February 17, they will play 1993, on Thursday 1994. You can count the days to your favorite year!

Rádio One began broadcasting in 1990 immediately following the anti-communist revolution. It was originally called Rádio Stalin, because it broadcast from the catacombs underneath the pedestal on Letná hill – all that remained of the former Stalin monument.

The pirate radio station didn’t survive long before the authorities confiscated their transmitter. But some 30,000 people signed a petition to reinstate the station, and in 1991 Rádio One began broadcasting from the legendary Bunkr rock club in Prague 1, which was written up in all foreign guidebooks to Prague.

Rádio One is a symbol of independence and continues to be open to excellent non-commercial music and cultural projects, unlike most other stations.

If you would like to enjoy some rockin’ good music, check out 91.9 FM or www.radio1.cz. And if it’s your birthday, you can ask them to play your favorite song and if it is from the relevant year, you can be sure to hear it!
