Five women and four men - all of them Tuaregs from Mali's Timbuktu - make up the ensemble Tartit, which means "union" in the Tuareg language. Although they follow in the footsteps of other Malian musicians such as Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré, they have their own sound: a calm and hypnotic music, with the women accompanied by their drums and the men playing the lute and guitar.
In 2003, they participated at the au Essakane Desert Festival alongside Tinariwen and d'Ali Farka Touré. It was here that Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin noticed them. In 2006, Tartit joined with Afel Bocoum and Habib Koité to form the Desert Blues ensemble. They will appear in Prague as part of the Respect Plus 2010 festival on February 17 at the Akropolis.
