What to do with the family this weekend

September 2009 - On 28 September, the Czech Republic will celebrate its patron saint, St, Wenceslaus. Despite his short life and reign, the son of Vratislaus I of Bohemia and Drahomira, Wenceslaus became one of the most beloved rulers of the Czech lands. September 28 marks the day of his death and is a national holiday.

Saint Wenceslaus festivities in Cesky Krumlov

The Saint Wenceslaus festivities were first held in 1945. On the evening of September 27, all of the country's churchbells sounded for half an hour. In Krumlov, the Czechoslovak national anthem was performed by soldiers of the American army who that year had liberated southern and western Bohemia. In homage to the victims of the Second World War, a St. Wenceslaus mass was celebrated on September 28, 1945 at the Church of St. Vitus in Cesky Krumlov. Today, Saint Wenceslaus is celebrated with a weekend-long festival featuring many stage performances and concerts.

On the evening of St. Wenceslaus day, the town's museums and the galleries are open and many events such as an artisan's market take place in the city. Restaurants always offer a special Saint Wenceslaus menu.

Our advice:

Český Krumlov's beauty rivals that of Prague. Located more than three hours to the south by car, a visit is more pleasant if combined with an overnight stay. Numerous pensions offer rooms at attractive prices. All you have to do is contact the local tourist office.

If your children are six years old or older, and weather permitting, why not rent a canoe and take a leisurely ride down the upper stretches of the Vltava. The canoe companies will pick you up and return you to the center of town. Count on spending at least four hours on such a tour.

Not far from Prague, the Karlštejn wine harvest is truly an event not to miss, a spectaculair, fun and interesting experience.
