World War One on Foot - The war as seen by a Czech photographer

August 2009 - The horror and banality of war, shown in amazing restored photographs.

The most interesting thing about this exhibit is the fact that it's original subtitle was "Through the Lens of an Unknown Photographer." Soon after the exhibit opened, however, the photographer's grandson recognized the photographs as those of his grandfather. And so the exhibit has been expanded to include a biography of the photographer, as well as the captions provided by the photographer himself.

The exhibition showcases a collection of almost 160 photographs providing an authentic view of the Galician and Italian fronts in 1915-1917. The collection is one of the most extensive Czech collections on World War I, and shows amazing and horrible scenes from the frontlines, ruined villages and churches, repairing bombed out briedges, but also the everyday life of soldiers - shaving, bathing, playing card.
