Enjoy a beer in the sun: Prague beer gardens
Bohemia is the land of beer, and the warm summer days just demand that you spend time outdoors. Time to head to some of Prague's outdoor beer gardens.
For a grand view over the Old Town, no place beats the shady tables and benches on Letná plain. And 25 crowns for a half-liter is definitely an improvement over the inflated prices at tourist traps down below. There is no table service, but the snack bar where you order your beer also serves small tidbits to eat (open every day from 10am to 11pm).
Another venue high above town is located on Vyšehrad hill. Here, you will find the friendly and unpretentious Na hradbách beer garden, which offers a view across the fortifications and down over the Nusle district. Great beer and good grilled food await! This place is definitely the most "local" of the beer gardens, with lots of young people who don't mind sitting on the logs that serve as benches or straight in the grass (open every day until 10pm; last call at 9:45pm).
Or try Riegrovy sady park in Vinohrady, closer to the center. In the park's center, a giant beer garden features a projection television, making it possible during sporting events - such as this year's World Cup in football (or, if you prefer, soccer). The garden and restaurant (most sausages and simple bar snacks; no table service) are open Monday to Saturday from 11:30am to 11pm. A little way from this large enclosed beer garden, you will find a small turret-like building also offering beer and other refreshments - plus a great panoramic view over Prague.
In Nusle, the Na Květnici restaurant offers a beer garden, open every day until 10pm. Nearby, just next to the sadly dilapidated and unused Vyšehrad train station, you will find a small outdoor terrace open until 10pm. In the Břevnov district, there is the Kaštan alternative music and culture venue. In addition to offering small rock and folk ensembles or theatre, there is a great and friendly beer garden out front where you will encounter old and young alike. Not far from here but in a different world, the beautiful Břevnov monastery is home to a very pleasant terrace tavern that is open from 10am to 10pm in the summer.
But you don't have to travel outside the center for an outdoor beer experience. Right near Narodni Trida metro on Spalená street is U kotvy. Hidden in a courtyard accessed through a building that also houses a pizzeria, it is a well-known destination for locals.
